Through God's Grace we seek to make Brookside Methodist Church a place for everyone to come together and allow Jesus and the Holy Spirit to make a lasting difference in our lives, community and church.

What We Believe

The Cross is at the centre of our faith

What is a Christian?

Christians are people who follow Jesus Christ. This requires a commitment of belief and faith. This faith then leads to the following of a lifestyle that Christians believe has been set in place by Jesus.

Part of that commitment to Jesus also means being a part of a church. The teachings of Jesus and what Jesus did are set down for Christians in the New Testament of the Bible.

What is the Trinity?

Christians believe that there is one God. However God has been experienced as three persons - Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This does not divide God in any way but is a humble statement of the way that we have experienced God. God exists in the three persons all at the same time.

Who is Jesus?

Jesus has many titles. Some of the more familiar are: Christ, Son of God, Saviour. Each has great meaning for Christians. However the life and witness of Jesus is of paramount important for the Christian faith. Jesus is God taking human form so we can stand a better chance of finding God.

Notice that we say Who is Jesus? That's because we believe that Jesus is here with us today in the form of the Holy Spirit, the third part of the Trinity.

Who is the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity. Christians believe that they experience God as the Holy Spirit who lives in each Christian. The Holy Spirit gives strength and gifts to enable Christians to do God's work.

What is sin?

Sin is anything that is against God. If we do something that God does not want us to do then we sin. Christians believe that everyone (including themselves) sins and is in need of forgiveness from God.

How does one find forgiveness?

God has tried to make this as easy as possible for us. We do not deserve God's forgiveness but he gives it anyway. It's important to understand that forgiveness is not earned, it is a free gift from God (this is called grace).

Christians believe that the death and resurrection of Jesus play a vital part in the forgiveness of God. This is so important that Christians celebrate this event every time they meet. The last supper (Eucharist, Lord's Supper etc) is remembered on a regular basis.

What is Easter?

Easter is a time when Christians remember the last week, the death of, and resurrection (rising from the dead) of Jesus. It is a high point in the Christian year.

What is Christmas?

Christmas is a time when Christians remember the birth of Jesus.

What is different about Christianity from other religions? Christianity shares many things with other religions. It even has its roots in the Jewish faith as does Islam. It is Jesus that makes Christianity unique.

Most religions look at the wise teaching of a person (or persons) and so choose to follow that person (or persons). Christianity looks to who Jesus is first and then follows His teaching because of who He is. This is the opposite of most religions.

Christians also have a unique perspective on the grace of God and that forgiveness cannot be earned but is freely given by God.
